Silver American eagles, which the United States government first introduced in 1986, are one of the most popular ways to invest in silver bullion. American silver eagles are 1 ounce coins made from 99.9% pure silver bullion and with a face value of $1 USD. A trace amount of copper is added to increase durability.
Like the American eagle gold coin, the design for the silver was adapted from an older American coin. The image of “Walking Liberty,” located on the front of the silver American Eagle, first debuted in 1916 on the half-dollar coin designed by Adolph Weinman. Lady Liberty is wrapped in the American flag walking towards the sun with branches of oak and laurel in her left hand.
The reverse designed by John Mercanti depicts a heraldic eagle with a shield carrying an olive branch and arrows in its talons. An inverse pyramid of thirteen stars representing the thirteen original colonies floats above its head. The words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA ‘ 1 OUNCE FINE SILVER ~ ONE DOLLAR ‘” encircle the eagle. This original design was on the coin from 1986 to mid-2021. The coin’s first update was designed by Emily Damstra which shows a bald eagle with its wings extended as its talons hold an oak branch.
A full tube contains 20 brilliant uncirculated coins, which is the most popular way to acquire these items.
These coins are IRA eligible.
